“Light In The Darkness” is a song I wrote celebrating the story of Jesus of Nazareth’s birth. But more than that the “light” in the darkness is asking us to “come” and draw close to Him and let Him carry our burdens of darkness so we can rest in the light, hope, and joy of salvation.
Light represents what is good, pure, true, and holy. Darkness represents evil and sin. When we state that God/Jesus is the “light,” it means that God is perfect, holy, and true. He alone can guide us out of all darkness, as light always overcomes darkness. Think about this: You’re in a room and it is pitch dark; you light a single candle and what happens? The entire room is illuminated by the one candle. The light from the candle overpowers the darkness so you can see around the room, so you do not bump into something, etc.
This is the same way with God. When we let God’s light radiate within us and draw close to Him, we begin to see our way out of the darkness or challenges that face us. He will be there to guide us through and out of the darkness.
Since darkness represents sin and evil, Jesus was born to give us the light and the hope of salvation. In this time of Advent, we celebrate the anticipation of the coming birth of Jesus Christ. Advent stems from the Latin word, adventus, which means “coming.”1 Jesus came, died, rose from the dead, and later ascended to heaven to give us the hope of salvation. He overcame death and gave us the way to freedom and victory through grace. He is the light and the only way to the Father.
Since Jesus has come and offers each of us the gateway to heaven, we have the free will of choice to “come” and invite Him into our hearts and enter into an intimate relationship with Jesus Christ.
Remember, in that manger bed, our redemption story unfolds.
Scripture regarding God/Jesus is the light that forever shines in the darkness:
John 1:4-5 (NIV) – In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
John 1:9 (NIV) – The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world.
John 1:12 (NIV) – Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God – children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.
John 14:6 (NIV) – Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
1 John 1: 5-7 (NIV) – This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is the light; in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.
Below are the lyrics to “Light In The Darkness:”
1st Verse
On a silent night, love was born for all mankind
In the humble stable, hope for all hearts unwind
In a sky ablaze, a star of wonder shines bright
Wisemen and shepherds came, guided by heavenly light
2nd Verse
Shepherds returned, declaring Christ’s love to all on earth
With angelic hymns, Mary and Joseph, cherished His birth
Immanuel, God with us, we find all joy and peace
O come let us adore Him, Christ, the newborn king
Bridge
Beyond Bethlehem’s glow, a new era ignites
The road to heaven, is paved in gold
In the manger bed, our redemption story unfolds
Chorus
Light in the darkness, we come
Born in a manger, God’s love is shown
Joy in our hearts, God’s grace is known
Light in the darkness, we come
Jesus, our Savior, the humble light was born
Story of Jesus’ Birth – Luke 2:1-20 (NIV)
In those days Ceasar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. (This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.) And everyone went to their own town to register.
So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.
And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”
Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,
“Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”
When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”
So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.
